Time out...
I made this pic during the morning rush into London's King's Cross while working alongside @BishopstonTim on our little 'Commute' project. I have always been pretty well pleased that I don't actually 'commute' during the rush hour(s) much at all but it was fascinating to hear how many folk just use the journey to switch off, listen to music, read... generally taking some time out...
I've been thinking of the commuters even more during recent days as I get ready to take some time out for myself. It's something I always recommend to coaching and consulting clients; that they take time...
Not only to think, but to think about how they think and rigorously attend to the patterns that drive their choices and decision making. It's careful work that often requires support and the investment of regular time for disciplined reflection.
However, rather curiously, the Department of Transport have now started to calculate the 'real value of time'; a rail passenger's time comes in at £36.96 an hour - more than a car driver or a cyclist... (huh?)
According to the DoT, the value of time will rise in the future (I wonder if we will be able to afford it any more?) and so those few moments on the commute will become even more precious.
Maybe we need slower trains....?
